Presidio's Field Station turns a park outing into an investigation
Free drop-in access, changing hands-on materials and borrowed field gear offer an accessible starting point for exploring the Presidio.

Before setting out across a park, it can help to have a question. The Field Station at Presidio Tunnel Tops is designed to encourage that curiosity, using specimens, historical artifacts, tools and maps to connect visitors with the Presidio's nature and history.
The free space sits beside the Outpost nature playground and welcomes all ages. Its contents change with the seasons and over shorter periods, so a return visit may offer a different investigation. Activities are hands-on where indicated, with staff guidance helping visitors use the materials appropriately.

Current public hours are Wednesday–Friday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Individual visitors need no ticket or reservation. Youth and school groups should arrange a visit ahead so staff can support the group. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with accessible restrooms nearby.
Ask about borrowing binoculars, magnifiers, field guides or a Presidio Explorer Backpack for an outing of your own. A useful plan is to investigate something inside and then look for related patterns outdoors. Follow park rules and leave natural objects in place; observations and sketches can carry the discovery home. Return borrowed gear according to staff instructions before the Field Station closes.
